Using University Student Engagement and Student Climate Surveys to Address Equity-Based Program Assessment
Presentation 1 Description

Based on the results from a study conducted at California State University Sacramento, recommendations to effectively link university-wide student engagement and climate surveys with program-level assessment are addressed. The study shows that campus climate and student engagement surveys yield rich and meaningful results that can elevate discussions about student success and improve program assessment. In particular, the study illustrates persistent race and ethnic equity gaps relative to how students engage their learning environments and how they perceive their learning environments. Six recommendations for elevating program-level assessment based on the research findings are discussed.

Presentation 2 Title
Preparing Students for Success: One Program Review at a Time
Presentation 2 Description

Program reviews play a crucial role in ensuring student success in higher education. They are systematic evaluations of academic programs, departments, or institutions to assess their effectiveness, quality, and alignment with educational goals and standards. The importance and relevance of program reviews for student success can be understood in several ways: Quality Assurance: Program reviews are a means of ensuring that academic programs maintain high standards of quality. When programs are regularly reviewed, it helps identify areas that need improvement, ensuring that students receive a quality education. Curriculum Alignment: Review processes can help ensure that a program's curriculum is up-to-date and aligned with industry trends and evolving academic standards. This ensures that students receive education that is relevant and prepares them for real-world challenges. Student-Centered Focus: Program reviews often consider the needs and perspectives of students. When programs are designed and revised with students in mind, it increases the likelihood that students will find their education meaningful and relevant to their career goals. Resource Allocation: Program reviews can lead to better allocation of resources. When institutions understand which programs are effective and where improvements are needed, they can allocate resources more efficiently, directing funding and support to areas that benefit students the most. Identification of Best Practices: Through program reviews, institutions can identify and share best practices that lead to student success. This allows for the dissemination of effective teaching and support strategies across the institution. Continuous Improvement: Regular program reviews promote a culture of continuous improvement. Institutions that engage in ongoing self-assessment are more likely to adapt to changing educational landscapes and provide students with the best possible learning experiences. Accreditation and Compliance: Many accrediting bodies require program reviews as part of the accreditation process. Ensuring compliance with accreditation standards is essential for institutions, as it impacts the value of a student's degree and access to financial aid. Data-Driven Decision-Making: Program reviews are typically data-driven, relying on evidence to make informed decisions about program changes. Data analysis allows institutions to understand trends, identify areas of concern, and make decisions that benefit students. Transparency and Accountability: Program reviews create a transparent process that can help build trust within the academic community. Faculty, administrators, and students can be confident that the institution is committed to providing a high-quality education. Student Engagement and Retention: By examining factors related to student success, such as retention rates, graduation rates, and student satisfaction, program reviews help institutions identify challenges and implement strategies to improve student engagement and retention.
