San José State University’s journey toward earning the Seal of Excelencia demonstrates how mission-driven equity commitments can be translated into measurable institutional effectiveness. This workshop provides a model for how our institution applied the Seal’s evidence-based framework to align assessment, data use, and program review with our student success mission. Participants will learn how integrating culturally responsive metrics and cross-unit collaboration strengthened continuous improvement cycles and advanced institutional impact in serving all students.
Magdalena Barrera, Vice Provost for Faculty Success and Accreditation Liaison Officer, San Jose State University
This presentation continues CHSU’s story from the ARC 2025 poster, “Connecting the Dots: Aligning Strategic Plan, QA, and ERM to ensure continuous improvement of students’ success and experience.” Over the past year, CHSU transformed that vision into action—integrating Strategic Planning, QA, and ERM into a unified, data-driven framework. This initiative fostered a campus-wide culture of evidence, collaboration, and accountability, sharing key lessons and actionable strategies that drive institutional effectiveness and advance continuous student success.

The current higher education multiverse makes it imperative that institutional quality monitoring and collaboration continue for both accreditors and accredited institutions, and particularly WSCUC institutions with external accreditor and agency commitments. The presenters provide insight from an institution’s challenges associated with stakeholder “buy-in” that extend beyond solely meeting accreditation standards. Through innovation, technology, and educating stakeholders of accreditation’s role in assuring educational quality, the institution shares strategies that internalize quality as an institutional norm.
