Makiko Imamura (Ph.D. in Communication Studies; University of Kansas) is the Vice Provost for Institutional and Educational Effectiveness and Professor of Communication at Saint Mary’s College of California and serves as the Accreditation Liaison Officer. Her previous leadership roles include the Director of Assessment and Educational Effectiveness, Chair of Core Curriculum, and Director of Faculty Development. While in the position of the Director of Assessment and Educational Effectiveness, she co-led the program review revision process with the Chair of the Program Review Committee, spearheaded the design and launch of the Center for Equity and Excellence in Teaching, and redesigned the assessment process and protocol for the undergraduate Core Curriculum to focus on finding and closing equity gaps in student learning. In the past three years, she led three sponsored assessment projects funded by Explorance Global, as well as was a recipient of the Spotlight on Humanities grant funded by the National Endowment of Humanities. As the Vice Provost, she has recently launched the Assessment Leadership group composed of faculty representing various schools and programs as an adjacent group supporting academic programs and the program review committee. Dr. Imamura is an intercultural and intergroup communication scholar with training in social scientific methodology and data analysis. Her research examines how cultural and social identities and values manifest in communication, how communication practices create or reinforce these identities and values, and how power dynamics and contexts inform perceptions, biases, and expectations.
