The chairs of two different university departments will share the development of a philosophy and aligning practice with regards to assessment that promotes student agency, student metacognition and student regulation in their learning. This session will highlight the what, the why and how of the change process we have undergone to shift our assessment practices. The chairs will also describe the impact this has had on student learning, teaching effectiveness and equity in their classrooms.

In recent changes that have occurred in the governance of colleges and universities, the one that is likely to have the greatest impact on the relationships between the faculty and the administration is the move from a “shared governance” to a “participatory” structure. The differences between the two is the subject of this paper and one that is increasing important to discuss and debate for the future welfare of higher education.
