Institutions of higher education regularly create, internalize, and share knowledge, but it is sometimes difficult to apply these processes to achieve internal goals in a useful and integrated way. Dr. Carole Huston and Dr. Ron Kaufmann from the University of San Diego will share strategies for developing and strengthening a culture of evidence gathering, learning, and improvement that can be achieved though planning, review, and meaning making across the institution.
Carole L. Huston is Special Assistant to the Vice President of Institutional Effectiveness and Strategic Initiatives at the University of San Diego, a Professor of Communication Studies, and a consultant for a number of institutions. She has served as USD's ALO and director of the Center for Educational Excellence, and participated in WSCUC accreditation review teams. In her more than 30 years of experience in higher education, Carole has researched and presented on many different facets of learning assessment at AI, AAC&U, AALHE, and WSCUC conferences, including competency assessments in general education, multi-institutional and multi-method assessment projects, integrative learning, program review, and assessing diversity and social justice in faith-based institutions. She has also served on several WSCUC groups: student achievement and transparency of student learning. As an alumna, she currently co-facilitates the WSCUC Assessment Leadership Academy. Carole has co-authored several articles, books and book chapters on assessment, research methods, interpersonal and intercultural communication, and she contributed to the VALUE rubrics project sponsored by AAC&U.
Ron Kaufmann, PhD, is Associate Dean for Programs and Curriculum in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of San Diego, and Professor of Environmental and Ocean Sciences. In this administrative role, he oversees academic program review for the College, which includes 19 departments and three interdisciplinary programs. He also chairs the College's assessment team (A-Team), which works with departments to conduct annual curricular assessment for 29 undergraduate majors, USD's Honors Program and three graduate programs. In addition, he serves on USD's University Assessment Committee, which coordinates assessment activity across all academic and non-academic units, and WSCUC Executive Committee, which includes the ALO and manages USD's accreditation reaffirmation process.
