Dr. Barry Ryan has spent more than three decades in higher education, blending leadership, legal expertise, and academic vision. He has served as president of five universities and as provost or chief of staff at three others, guiding both nonprofit and for-profit institutions through transformative change. His leadership emphasizes transparency, shared governance, and the preservation of academic quality during mergers, acquisitions, and strategic affiliations.
A recognized expert in accreditation and governance, Dr. Ryan completed two terms as a Commissioner for the regional accreditor WASC (WSCUC). Internationally, he has established programs and partnerships in the United Kingdom, France, Brazil, Costa Rica, Belize, and Guatemala
. Before his university presidencies, Dr. Ryan served as the Supreme Court Fellow in the chambers of Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist, reflecting a distinguished parallel career in law and legal education. He is admitted to numerous state and federal bars and continues to contribute to discussions at the intersection of higher education and public policy.
He earned his Ph.D. from the University of California, Santa Barbara; his J.D. from the University of California, Berkeley; and a Dipl.GB in International Business from the University of Oxford.
