Is AI the Answer? Opportunities and Limitations of using AI for Institutional-level Academic Assessment

In higher education, while AI use is rapidly expanding, little has been done on institutional learning outcomes (ILO) assessment.This presentation explores the potential of AI tools to support ILO assessment through the direct evaluation of student artifacts. We used ChatGPT andCoPilot to assess student work and compared the results to scores generated by trained, experienced faculty assessors. Initial findings revealed opportunities, limitations, and limited alignment between AI-generated scores and those assigned by human assessors.
