As a high impact practice, the First Year Experience is designed to promote student belonging, retention, and student success. Beyond treating this course as an extended orientation, however, common intellectual experiences can equip students with the tools that they need to live and thrive in diverse communities while building intercultural posture, knowledge, and skills. This presentation will discuss proactive approaches in first year experience curriculum for a shared and inclusive commitment to community flourishing.

At UCLA, the Undergraduate Research Centers offer a new course -- Research Practice 96 - Bruins Studying Bruins: Introduction to Higher Education Research through a Course-Based Collaborative Research Project -- in which students learn about outcomes assessment, the development of rubrics, and the evaluation of learning. Students assess recordings of undergraduate research presentations, and their findings inform the improvement of core competency learning across campus.
