After serving on the faculty of the University of Nebraska, Schuster moved to the University of Florida in 1990 to lead the Interdisciplinary Center for Biotechnology Research and later the founding of the Sid Martin Biotechnology Incubator, one of the first university biotechnology incubators in the US. In 2003 he was appointed President of the Keck Graduate Institute for Applied Life Sciences in Claremont, California. At KGI, he collaborated with the emerging biotechnology industry to build graduate degree programs bridging science and industry and launched a variety of health care professional programs. In addition to the Master’s in Business and Science degree program, which became the premier graduate degree merging business and science, he oversaw the development of master’s degree programs in Biopharmaceutical Bioprocessing; Regulatory Affairs and Clinical Trials; and Medical Devices and Diagnostics. He founded a School of Pharmacy and added master’s degrees in Genetic Counseling, Genome Data Analytics, Community Health Administration, Physician Associate Studies, and a Doctorate in Occupational Therapy. He also initiated international online education programs in India and Malaysia and served on the WASC Senior College Commission. After 21 years as President, he recently retired to assume new roles in teaching. He serves on the Boards of Directors of Rady Children’s Institute for Genomic Medicine; the Pasadena Bioscience Collaborative; and the National Organization for Rare Disorders.
