Relationships over Partisanship and Politics: Centering Civility to Produce Outcomes That Matter
Description
Higher education institutions hold an important responsibility in student character development as students often initially establish their own opinions and build a political ethic in their college years. Recognizing this, previous research has pointed to the need for colleges and universities to address the U.S.’ hyper-polarized political landscape by producing civil citizens (Ulbig, S. G., 2020). Consequently, one small, private, non-profit, Hispanic-serving institution implemented a “Year of Civility” to equip students to engage with others while centering dignity, respect, and humility. This model’s design, implementation, impact on campus climate, and contribution to institutional learning and post-graduate outcomes will be discussed.
