Transforming the Academic Program Review Process: Insights from Faculty Perspectives
Description

Academic Program Review (APR) plays a critical role in helping institutions streamline their offerings in response to shrinking resources and declining enrollment. However, the review process experience can vary significantly, from a straightforward to a complex routine that creates tension between faculty and administrators. As a result, some academic programs may not fully engage with the process, resulting in backlogs and missed opportunities for institutional improvement. In 2020, California Lutheran University recognized these challenges and overhauled its entire APR process in response to complaints, series of unreviewed programs, and a need to raise awareness of the process’s importance. Four years later, faculty across programs will share their insights and experiences with the new review process by highlighting how the redesign addressed previous challenges, improved participation, and fostered collaboration between faculty and administrators. Additionally, recommendations on how to further enhance the APR process and support meaningful faculty engagement will be discussed.
