Drawing from her experience as former deputy general counsel for the U.S. Department of Education and associate general counsel at Northwestern University, Husch Blackwell attorney Julie Miceli will provide an overview of emerging legislative, regulatory, and policy initiatives impacting institutions of higher education and accreditors. Leo Martinez, WSCUC Commission vice chair and dean emeritus at the University of California College of the Law, San Francisco, will facilitate discussion and offer the Commission’s perspective on the fast-moving regulatory environment.

About our panelists:
Julie Miceli is a member of Husch Blackwell’s Higher Education group and Managing Partner of the firm's Chicago office. Her practice is dedicated to serving private and public institutions of higher education. Before joining Husch Blackwell, Julie served as the deputy general counsel for higher education and federal student aid at the U.S. Department of Education, and prior to that, as the chief of staff and special counsel to the general counsel for that agency. Most recently, Julie served as associate general counsel at Northwestern University, a major research institution in Evanston, Illinois.
Leo P. Martinez, WSCUC Commission Vice Chair, is Dean Emeritus and Albert Abramson Professor of Law Emeritus at the University of California College of the Law, San Francisco. Professor Martinez is the past Chair of the Council of the American Bar Association (ABA) Section of Legal Education and Admissions to the Bar (the accrediting body for U.S. law schools authorized by the Department of Education). He is currently a Managing Director at Andersen, the tax and financial services firm.
