Recognizing Ableism and Personal Biases through Student Connection Strategies to Defeat Marginalization in the Special Education Community
Description

Ableism is so pervasive in society, it is not surprising that we probably harbor ableist beliefs and act in ableist ways without knowing it. We are commonly unaware of our internal biases. To reduce ableism and marginalization in educational institutions, we can look through the lens of a Course Buddy connection. Understanding ableism through a mirrored expectation of a school environment, student candidates learn how teams of cooperation are needed to reduce marginalization. Attendees will be able to take away strategies for teaching collaboration skills to individuals in need of understanding the impact of their words or actions through ideas, assumptions, stereotypes, attitudes, practices, or physical barriers in the environment.
